You’re Engaged! Now What?

Whether intimate or amidst your closets family and friends, we understand the moments after a proposal can often be foggy. Though it’s an event you’ll never forget, we know emotions were high; there might have been tears.

Luckily, we know a thing or two about weddings—and planning stellar events, too. To ensure you and your partner start moving in the right direction in the days following your engagement, we put together this handy step-by-step guide.

But before we begin, congratulations! This is the start of a new chapter.

With social media at the forefront of communication these days, posting a picture of your ring might seem like the natural first step. But before you do so, we recommend taking some time for the two of you to enjoy the moment. Head to your favorite bar in town, pop a bottle of champagne at home, or treat yourself to a fancy dinner.

Once you’ve basked in the excitement of your engagement, call your family and friends. There’s something to be said about a personalized phone call these days. Once you’ve spoken with those in your immediate circles, feel free to post to social media a few days later.

Now that you have a ring on your finger, the last thing you want to do is take it off. But if there’s even just a bit of wiggle room, we recommend getting it sized right away.

Once your ring is sized, take it to be insured. Your ring probably costs a hefty sum, and while nothing can replace the sentimental value if lost or stolen, having it insured can certify you get the money back. If you have homeowner’s or renter’s insurance, call to add the ring to that policy, too.

While we recommend popping a few bottles of champagne between the two of you first, we also encourage couples to gather some of their closest family and friends for an engagement party. This event will get you and your partner in the marriage spirit (and who doesn’t want to be the center of attention?) and allow guests to congratulate you in person.

Keep in mind guests invited to the engagement party should also be invited to your wedding. Think of this party as the first draft of your guest list.

In choosing a date for your wedding, weather preference is a key factor. Do you want to have an outdoor wedding with orange and yellow foliage? Or do you prefer an ocean backdrop? Once you have an ambiance and ideal temperature in mind, you can set the date. If your heart is set on a particular venue, rather than a date or time of year, your first decision will need to be selecting a venue instead.

Gather Venues has hosted hundreds of weddings at our venues. And while we might be a bit biased, we think they turned out beautifully. To schedule a tour, or contact

Once you’ve locked down your dream venue and date, it’s time to put ideas on paper. Whether you decide to hire a wedding planner or go at it alone, you’ll need to create a schedule and to-do list. Start with big picture ideas—like the color scheme, food style, and attire—then tackle smaller checklist items next, like the first dance song. And while your to-do list might seem daunting, we promise it’s doable.

Finally, amidst all the hustle and bustle of the next six to eighteen months, we hope you can enjoy it. This is a special time for the both of you, so be sure to plan a few date nights here and there.
