Unlike most of the country, Summer is a quiet time for most businesses in Austin. The heat greets us every day with its comforting (and sometimes completely oppressive) rays. During the work week, we’re head down looking towards planning our fall galas, weddings, corporate offsite, and/or community gatherings. But we’re really thinking about visiting Barton Springs or Deep Eddy after work to just cool off for a second. The summer is a perfect time to focus on staff appreciation.
It’s a dry time of the year for business in Austin. Why not take the slower months to appreciate all the hard work your employees do all year-round? Staff appreciation events during work hours tend to boost company morale, create a stronger team culture, and promote a collaborative workplace.
We understand events are hard to plan in the summer without an immediate source of water for your staff to jump into. But we’ve identified three staff appreciation events you can plan this summer that will be all the rave amongst colleagues and friends. And really transform the boring corporate offsite.
1. Award your employees with a fun twist on the Award Ceremony.
Sit down galas where the boss stands at the podium and honors a select few employees is so 1996, right? But honestly, recognizing staff for the hard work they do never really gets old. You don’t have to be the next Michael Scott to have the best award ceremony for employees. Get together with your operations and/or HR team to make fun awards for each member of your team and have a party to celebrate them!
If your team is over 100+ employees, break it down into departments and have department heads celebrate their respective teams’ success.
2. Implement Summer Friday’s with a big celebration before Fall.
I once worked for a company that promoted Summer Fridays; which by their terms was every Friday regardless of employment status, you were allowed to leave at 2 pm and take the day for yourself. Not only was Summer Fridays something we looked forward to every year, but it was also an indirect way to promote great company culture. Because we all left work earlier, we would usually plan the afternoon as coworkers around Austin.
But summer always turns into fall and things get busier and we’d have to say goodbye to Summer Fridays.
To sustain the Summer Friday excitement, plan an “end of summer” party or offsite for your staff. Use this time to talk about the upcoming busy season, or use it as an award ceremony opportunity. Either way, your employees will feel valued and rejuvenated for the next season.
3. Plan a work and wellness event – with a happy hour after!
Meditation, yoga, and being out in nature can increase employee productivity. Gather your employees together to have a wellness day for your corporate offsite. At Gather Venues, we’ve had days begin with morning yoga, then lead into inspirational talks and offsite working. The day is fun to wrap up with a refreshing happy hour.
Taking the time for employee wellness means you both value your staff and their individual needs. When companies focus on employee wellness, teams are more likely to be happier with their roles and stay longer in their positions.
